Time Zone --
With
World Cup 2002 taking place on the other side of the world, many
US soccer fans are struggling to watch live soccer games, especially
on the east coast. The toughest time slots are 2:25am and 4:55am
leaving the only manageable game at 7:25am. West coast viewers
may have a 3 hour advantage, but in general: Gentlemen -- start
your VCRs!
Congratulations to Claudio Reyna on his
selection to the 16-member World Cup All-Star squad!

Brasil win record 5th World Cup Championship
in style
- (Jun 30) About 30% of the world watched
two of the best teams in the world battle for soccer bragging rights.
But when all was said and done, Brasil proved once again that the
rest of the world was clearly playing for 2nd place in this World
Cup. Brasil captured their unprecendented 5th World Cup Championship
in style remaining the lone squad with a perfect record in WC2002
(7-0-0!) A flurry of chances got the dream matchup underway, but
then both sides settled in for deliberate, if not ugly play for
the remainder of the first half -- the lone exception being Kleberson's
majestic blast which cleanly beat German keeper Oliver Kahn only
to slam the crossbar (45'.) Fortunately, the 2nd half action really
picked up in this match featuring all 3 leaders for the coveted
"golden boot" awarded to the tournament's top goal scorer.
Entering the match, Ronaldo had a slim one goal lead over teammate,
Rivaldo and opponent, Miroslav Klose. But Ronaldo scored 2 goals
in an 11 minute span (68' & 79') to win: the "golden boot"
title (8 goals,) the 2002 World Cup for Brasil and most likely,
the "golden ball" awarded on Tuesday to the tournament's
MVP! Certainly an impressive accomplishment for the Brasilian superstar
-- and by the way, he also tied Brasilian soccer god, Pele for the
all-time goal scoring lead (12.) Overall, a wonderful finale to
a tremendous tounament. Congratulations to Brasil! |

Brasil victory over Turkey sets up historic
final match -
(Jun 26) Brasil did not overwhelm upset-minded
Turkey, but Brasil did enough to pocket the victory and advance to
the Finals! Even without suspended midfield threat, Ronaldinho, Brasil
was able to attack with regularity against the diminutive Turkish
squad. After a scoreless first period, Ronaldo regained his scoring
touch with the lone tally of the match early in the second half (49'.)
Ronaldo took a pass and was "escorted" into the box by 4
Turkish defenders but none could prevent his right-footed "stab"
past the keeper and into the far right corner. Turkey did well to
compete with the South Americans and they had more than just a handful
of quality chances. However, it was not to be for the surprising Turks
who will now face S. Korea in the 3rd place match. 4-time World Cup
winners Brasil, move forward to take on 3-time World Champions, Germany.
A German victory will tie them with Brasil for the most World Championships
-- but Brasil are favored to capture their unprecedented 5th World
Cup Championship. Add to the drama that these two soccer juggernauts
have NEVER met in a World Cup match -- much less a World Cup FINAL
match!! An absolute dream finale to a wonderful global soccer tournament.
Enjoy the show!

Costly German victory ends S. Korea's WC2002
dream -
(Jun 25) Germany used their superior height
and strength to pressure the crowd-insprired Korean squad during the
majority of the match. Korea withstood the German assault until Michael
Ballack hammered home his own rebound (75',) propelling Deutschland
to their 7th World Cup Final match. However, German joy was tempered
with Ballack's costly yellow card booking (71',) preventing the "irreplaceable"
German leader from playing in the WC2002 Final showcase! Korea played
valiantly and defended passionately with all 10 field players behind
the ball and usually behind midfield. Korea attempted to follow the
strategy employed by the US in their quarterfinal match versus Germany
by counter-attacking against the larger but slower-footed Germans.
The Koreans achieved modest success with this approach but other than
a shot requiring a brilliant Oliver Kahn save (8',) Korea's best opportunities
resulted after they allowed the sole German tally. The Korean defense
finally broke down in the 75th minute when counter-attacking Oliver
Neuville carried deep down the right flank. The evasive Neuville centered
a perfect ball onto the foot of the streaking Ballack who knocked
home his own rebound for the lone score of the match. Germany now
faces either Brasil or Turkey in the June 30th finale of this tremendous
world soccer showcase! |

Turkey's "Golden Goal" sets up
rematch with Brasil -
(Jun 22) In the first match of group C qualifying
on June 3rd, Turkey was tied with Brasil 1-1 until Brasil was
awarded
a dubious penalty kick
in the 87th minute. Rivaldo converted the kick and Brasil won
the match 2-1 -- resulting in "dark horse" Turkey's
sole blemish of the tournament. So Turkey's golden goal victory
over Senegal was even sweeter because of the rematch it sets up
versus Brasil. This match featured two of the most physical and
aggressive teams in the tournament and both teams held nothing
back. Once again, for the first 90 miutes, excellent scoring chances
by both sides repeatedly resulted in nothing more than "close
calls." Senegal's Diouf, Camara and Fadiga and Turkey's Sas
and Sukur all had great opportunities to score but nothing to
show for it until overtime. Just 4 minutes into extra-time, mohawked
hero of the Japan match, Davila crossed the ball to 67' sub Ilhan
Mansiz at the edge of the box. Mansiz finished a beautiful side-volley
past the keeper and into the net, securing Turkey's spot in the
semis and setting up their rematch against group C foe, Brasil.

S. Korea advance to semis with PK victory over
Spain -
(Jun 22) This
"clash of the titans" featured two undefeated squads:
Spain was a perfect 4-0 and S. Korea had won 3 matches and tied
just one (the U.S.) The S. Korean squad broke more new ground with
their impressive penalty kick victory over talented, but conservative
Spain. This was Spain's second consecutive elimination game decided
by penalty kicks. However, this time, the S. Koreans did not miss
their kicks (as did the Irish) and Spain's "PK specialist"
Casillas was not a factor. S. Korea converted all 5 of their pk
attempts whereas Joaquin's miss opened the door for the clinching
goal by S. Korean captain Myung Bo Hong -- igniting the scarlet
celebration in Gwangju, South Korea! Spain had the greater number
of chances during the match, including two called back goals and
a shot by Morientes off the post, but S. Korea also produced some
excellent chances. Considering all the quality chances, it's quite
amazing that no goals were scored during 120 minutes of play! Host
nation S. Korea now faces off against Germany, who are coming off
their unimpressive 1-0 win over the U.S.
